"Tempest in a teacup" is an idiom that describes something that caused huge commotion over something so small. So in other words, its a phrase used to describe things being blown out of proportion or exaggerated.
In the beginning of Gone Girl, Amy and Nick are generally disagreeing over average marriage/ couple arguments. Things such as miscommunication, disappointment, and deception. However, Amy and Nick are far different than most couples in that they react much more extreme than most couples. Nick lies to and cheats on Amy for being too cold. Amy tries to sentence her husband to the death penalty for cheating on her. While both of these crimes are extremely unfair to the other, the punishments certainly do not fit the crime. The way that both Amy and Nick react to one anothers' mistakes certainly resembles "tempest in a teacup".
I feel that this image pictured above represents the idiom in itself as well as Amy and Nick. On the outside, it looks like a perfectly normal cup, maybe a bit cold and porcelain, but what you don't see is the inside. There is a storm brewing, and on the outside of both Amy and Nick they seem normal behind their deceitful facades. However on the inside their is narcissism, hatred, and revenge brewing inside their heads. Both of them lie to cover up their flaws, such as Nicks hiding of his emotions and Amy's masking of her deceit.
Ever since the beginning of the novel, we can see the signs of Nicks suspicious behaviors- the dreams about Amy's bloody body, his second cell phone ringing, and his suspicious smirk that he lets out at the press conference, all suggesting that he could be guilty. Something I really like about the book is that Nick not only lies to his family, friends, and his wife, but he also fools us readers. When it was revealed he had a mistress, I questioned his motives and leaves me wondering whether he did it or not. Around the middle of the book we see Amy's hidden side, revealing her dark, vengeful personality. However, just like a teacup, she remains pretty and well put together to fool everyone around her.
