Mariam from Thousand Splendid Suns and Quentin have a lot more in common than you would think. Although their stories are completely different, you would be amazed by how similar their characters personalities are and what they would do for their loved ones. Quentin and Mariam both start out in their books as scared, timid, afraid, and not knowing of who they are type of characters. They don’t know exactly what type of person they are and they are vulnerable to many things. Before their quests, they listened to what everyone said they were which was nothing, a vulnerable follower who is not capable of being a strong leader. They didn’t know who they were and they didn’t believe in themselves of being strong enough to lead on their own. At the beginning of the novel, Quentin was afraid to go out on the scavenger hunt with Margo because he wasn’t confident in himself. He was afraid of getting in trouble and being too nervous to do anything with such a brave and confident girl, or so he thought she was. Mariam, similarly was afraid when she was moved around with her husband and father. She was vulnerable and couldn’t stand up for herself when times got rough. They both were followers who couldn’t take a stand and do what they really wanted to do. As the novels progresses on, both characters begin to find who they truly are and find that they are strong and capable of doing what they thought for so long that they were too weak or too vulnerable to do. | Both characters are similar in the fact that they travel on a journey to take care of their loved ones and try their hardest to keep them safe. They will sacrifice and endure the risks to essentially save the lives of someone they love. For Quentin, he risks getting in trouble and missing what he was looking forward to the most, graduation and prom in sake of Margo's safety. Mariam is similar, but she is just on a much higher level. She risked her own life and sacrificed herself to keep her family and friends safe from the police. They are both extremely loving towards the people they love and they have a caring and courteous heart. |
